Scott Kaplan is one of a media personality that remains active in the world of sports media business. He has kept a steady presence on San Diego airwaves since 2001 where he partnered with former San Diego Charger Bill Ray Smith. Being the host and executive producer of the successful show “The Scott and BR” has opened so many doors for Kaplan.
Kaplan was born on February 17, 1970 on Tyndall Air Force Base, in Panama City, Florida where his father was serving.
Kaplan went to Coral Springs High School, in a suburb of Ft. Lauderdale. He had a very busy senior year, being the captain of the debate team, student body president and kicker on the football team. He landed a full football scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh with the help of his creative editing skills and many cold calls to college coaches.
Before he started his career in broadcasting, he was a place kicker at the University of Pittsburgh where he was the leading scorer of the team for three seasons. In 2010, he raced and completed the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii which is one of the toughest endurance races in the world.
He is the founder of the Great Friends Foundation which helps the children of San Diego’s military to go to college. They have 6 scholarship recipients who are attending UCLA, Harvard, SDSU and UCSD.
Together with his wife and four children, they live in Carmel Valley California.
Kaplan was one of the few people who pioneered internet radio. He was hired by then Sportsline USA executive Ross Levihnson to program a sports talk online radio station that operates 24 hour in 1996.
After spending two years in online broadcasting, Sportsline USA established a partnership with CBS Sports and the show “The Scott and Sid Show” was created with Kaplan and Sid Rosenberg as hosts.
Kaplan was also the host of Westwood One’s NFL Today pre-game show for two seasons. He provides analysis and sideline commentary, along with interviews and insider information, during his coverage of NFL Football.
He was a sideline reporter for more than 10 years, covering the NFL for CBS Sports and WW1. He has worked not just on the radio but on television as well and has worked with Marv Albert, Jim Nantz, Dave Simms and Ian Eagle.
He teamed up with Billy Ray Smith on XTRA 690 AM in May 2001 and formed The Mighty 1090 together with the original owner and programmer of XTRA 690 in late 2002. His show The Scott and BR alongside longtime broadcast partner Billy Ray Smith has been on the radio airwaves throughout Southern California for 15 years.
Kaplan is currently working as an NFL sideline reporter for CBS and Westwood One Sports.
He is also the mind behind Stable Wars, a reality TV show that used his experience as a horse racing stable manager as the basis of the show. He is also the Executive Producer of San Diego Prep Insider, a current hit local television show of Fox Sports San Diego which aired August 2015.
