The National Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s Division I Basketball Championship, or popularly known as the NCAA Tournament, is a single-elimination tournament for college basketball team in the United States. The winner of this tournament is often described by the media as the national champion of college basketball.
A Little Historical Background about the NCAA Tournament
The first NCAA Tournament was held on 1939 with the organizational help of the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Oregon defeated the Ohio State in a score of 46-33 in its first championship game.
It has a humble beginning – with 8 teams participating in the beginning, they were able to grow their numbers into 65 teams by 2001 and 68 teams joined the tournament as of 2011. By mid-1950s, NCAA Tournament became one of the most prestigious basketball events.
One of the most successful colleges in the NCAA Tournament is the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), with 11 national titles on its belt. They also hold the record of the most consecutive championship, with 7 wins in a row from 1967 to 1973.
Kentucky follows as the second with 8 titles, third is the North Carolina with 6 championships while Indiana and Duke follow with 5 titles each.

- Nevada Wolf Pack
Nevada scored an impressive home win over Rhode Island in the first week of the season. Cody Martin, a transfer from North Carolina State, is said to be the star of the team. He scored 13.5 points per game, 6.4 in rebound, 4.0 in assist, 1.6 in steals and 1.4 in blocks.
Along with other talented players in the roster such as Stephens, Caleb Martin and Hallice Cook, Nevada Wolf is one of the packs to look out for this season.
- Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders
Charles Sarver, an MTSU (Middle Tennessee State University) football player coined the nickname “Blue Raiders” in 1934 Daily News Journal contest. Before then, the team was called “Teachers”, “Normalities” or “Pedagogues”.
One of the team player leading the game is Nick King, who averaged 21.5 points and 8.3 rebounds. Another player to watch out for is Giddy Potts, a fine three-point shooter and the second-leading scorer on the team.
- Loyola-Chicago Ramblers
The Ramblers’ win over Florida in early December is one of the team’s best performances. Florida gators felt the pressure right away with four triples in just 10 minutes of the game, finishing the game on a 27-14 lead.
This team is well-rounded with veterans. They have two seniors and two redshot juniors who make up the top four in scoring.
- New Mexico State Aggies
Undoubtedly, the team’s win over Miami in the Diamond Head Classic is their best performance of the year. Top players such as Zach Lofton, Jemerrio Jones and Pascal Siakam will give their opponents a hard game to beat.
