LONDON – It was a successful night in the pool in London as both Missy Franklin and Matt Grevers took home gold medals in the women’s and men’s 100-meter backstroke.
It was the first individual Olympic medal for 17-year-old phenom Franklin. Grevers’ gold was his first as an individual after taking silver in the event in 2008. Fellow American Nick Thoman finished second to earn the silver medal.
The double golds put a positive spin on a night that began with disappointment for the American team as Ryan Lochte once again couldn’t keep up with France’s Yannick Agnel, who blew away the field in the men’s 200-meter freestyle. Lochte finished fourth just one night after Agnel tracked him down and passed him on the final leg of the 4×100 relay.
