To say the United States has dominated women’s basketball since it became an Olympic sport in 1976 is a bit of an understatement.
Team USA has taken home the gold medal in six of the eight Olympics in which it has competed. The only times someone other than the red, white and blue were celebrating at the end were: 1976, when the Soviet Union won the inaugural tournament; 1980, when the U.S. boycotted the Moscow Games and the Soviets won again; and 1992, when the Unified Team of former Soviet republics won the gold.
Since ’92, the Americans are on a run of four straight golds and they’ll look to make it five in London with star Maya Moore leading the way for coach Geno Auriemma’s team.
